Holly is an ancient symbol of protection--as you might guess from its prickly leaves! It's revered in both Celtic and Christian traditions. In the Celtic tradition, the Holly King is the evergreen twin of the Oak King, and in the bleak midwinter he holds dangerous spirits and dark nights at bay. In the Christian tradition, the spiky leaves represent Christ's crown of thorns.
